Due to the increase in popularity of the sport within the clubs of Malta and Gozo it was decided between the main squash clubs to create “The Squash Club Challenge Trophy” event.
Cynergi Health and Fitness Club, Living Well Health Club, Marsa Sports Club and a guest squash team from Gozo will be the participating teams for this 2010/11 challenge.
Each team will comprise of seven players of which two will be of an ‘A’ standard (experienced players), three from a ‘B’ standard (players with some experience) and three ‘C’ players (with little or no experience).
Each player will be ranked accordingly from one to seven within the team and will play against their matched counterpart from other teams making this challenge extremely balanced and interesting to watch.
The entire challenge will be spread over six months with the venue rotating between the clubs. The first event was held last Saturday with Cynergi being the hosting team. Marsa Sports Club will do the honours on Saturday 20 November followed by LivingWell on Saturday 11 December. A repeat will occur during the months of January, Feburary and March when a trophy will be awarded to the winning club who would have won most matches.
The Squash Club Challenge organisers comprising Nigel Dunkerley (Cynergi), Christer Gustafsson (LivingWell) and Colette Sultana (Marsa Sports Club) said:
“The aim of the competition is to enjoy playing squash as a team made up of players of different levels against players of same level from other clubs, with the emphasis on the social and sporting aspect of the event. After the event every player will be able to unwind and talk about the games as each hosting team is in charge of organizing a social event. We are hoping that after this Challenge more clubs would participate making this a regular event in the Maltese Squash Calendar.”
Anyone interested in joining is urged to contact their respective club.
