A weekend of rain did not deter a group of 15 children aged between seven and 10 from sailing at Malta Young Sailors Club during an open day organised at Ta’ Xama, St Paul’s Bay.
Following a summer sailing course for beginners on Optimist dinghies, the novice sailors were tried and tested in a series of fun races, organised by Club Commodore André Borg and National Optimist Coach Jean Paul Fleri Soler, together with the participation of other experienced MYSC sailors.
MYSC has an excellent record of champions on both national and international levels, including Benji Borg and Sebastian Ripard who are currently training and aiming at qualifying in the 49er class in the 2012 Olympics. Certificates were distributed to all sailors who participated in this summer’s beginners’ course and prizes were given to the winners of the fun races.
The event was sponsored by Atlas Insurance and in conjunction with MYSC’s 10th anniversary of summer sailing, a barbecue was also organised at the Club House during the prize giving ceremony.
