Basketball – Women’s National league: Athleta back to winning platform

Malta Independent Tuesday, 2 November 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Athleta returned to winning ways after three defeats beating the bottom club in a sound manner. Mtarfa were contained by their adversaries and limited in final tally as Athleta drew away in every session they played in.

Mtarfa had Diane Falzon back after missing two matches and included their new signing Adriana Demanuele from their parent Depiro club. Athleta had Rhian Spiteri for the first time this season.

In the opening period it was Athleta with the hoops and Mtarfa with their triples from Martha Abela and Gaby Mifsud but in the meantime Athleta made two 8-0 runs for a good first session lead as Leanne Sciberras made her mark early in the match.

In the second quarter it was still Sciberras along with Lonike Calleja with their points for Athleta as Mtarfa fell further behind.

Falzon sank a last second trey for them but Mtarfa were still 15-38 behind in arrears at the interval.

Mtarfa did not have a ready reply after the break and Athleta were able to put more distance between the two sides. It was only towards the end of the period that free throws helped Mtarfa to push up their score.

The last session was very short on points with Mtarfa only able to manage a single hoop though Athleta did not fare so much better but they were well in front and it didn’t matter so much.
