Several athletes from the Taekwondo Dragon Club have participated in the first local Taekwondo open championship with the name of Malta Taekwondo Spirit that was held on Sunday 31 October at St. Martin’s College.
For this event a number of foreigners from Cyprus and Luxembourg have participated as well. The athletes who represented the Taekwondo Dragon Club were: Dylan Mc Cormick, Emma Simmons, Lynsey Fenech, Jody Bruno, Luke Ebejer, Amanda Borg, Kylie Magro, Kyle Vassallo, Christian Sant, Joseph Caruana and Henry Aquilina.
Jody Bruno, Kylie Magro, Joseph Caruana and Lynsey Fenech have won their respective category against their Maltese counterpart.
For some of the competitors this was their first experience. Mc Cormick, Vassallo and Simmons all lost against their foreign counterpart who resulted very tough to tackle.
On Saturday 23 October, the club organised its Annual Gozo Training Camp at the Rabat Sports Complex together with the Tenchi Ryu Karate Jutsu Club lead by Sensei Joe Portelli, the Gozo Spirit Combat Club and the Gozo Kick Boxing Club lead both by Sensei Mario Saliba.
Sabomnim Formosa took the lead and in fact he took the core of the seminar by emphasising on the necessary training required in order to achieve proper kicking dynamics. Sensei Saliba demonstrated some Kickboxing exercises followed by a number of self-defence applications derived from Spirit Combat. To conclude it was Sensei Portelli who demonstrated several self-defence applications deriving from several patterns forming part of their training syllabus.
