I should not judge the intention of your letter writer Alfred Balzan of Sliema’s (What a blunder, TMID 4 November) but too many posing as environmentalists are either useful idiots or have a hidden agenda to steer business away from Gozo and towards their locality! 

People living in Gozo need to make a living, including the hoteliers, the services providers etc. and the rest of us are thankful that these entrepreneurs, rather than closing shop and moving to Malta, remain here through thick and thin.

Apart from catering for those who visit, they offer the rest of us facilities at par with those obtainable in Malta and in the advanced European Union countries. If Mr Balzan or others shedding crocodile tears for Gozo’s Dwejra ever visit this place during inclement weather they would put their minds at rest that any sand deposited for  some filming scenes, over the millions of years old rock embedded fossils, will either wash away or get blown by the high winds in this very exposed area. 

The blunder might have been the use of bulldozers to clear the sand quickly away rather than letting nature take its course. An understandable course of action seeing that the ‘for hire’ environment band wagon is quick to shoot any lucrative activity in Gozo without they themselves thinking of offering an alternative to this island, which in large part has been reduced to a ‘dormitory’ suburb, including through man made hurdles, as His Grace Bishop Cauchi (may the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for him to be given his health back) decades ago very farsightedly warned.
