Athleta laid hands on the first honour of the season as they made it five Shield wins out of 13 finals.
They played tight defence and regulary punished Siggiewi’s mistakes especially when the latter tried to convert quick attacks which left them sparse at the back.
It was nearly always uphill for the champions who could never quite make up a deficit which opened and decreased in various stages of the match.
Siggiewi’s frustration at the end led to two dismissals a double anti sporting foul and a sending off for remarks passed.
Siggiewi had the same formation which disposed of Depiro in the semi final. Athleta recovered Etienne Bezzina who had missed some games for them and introduced their new foreigner Welshman Alexander Ryan who was only utilised in the latter stages of the match.
The winners opened up with two triples by Michael Naudi and Omar said but Siggiewi also had Peter Shoults with a trey and the two outfits were close as Shoults and Marco Matijevic boosted the champions and Naudi Said and Steve Schembri kept Athleta in a first session lead.
Siggiewi fell further behind in the second quarter as Naudi and Schembri with a helping hand from the latters brother Dirk opened up a double figure advantage despite the efforts of Shoults and Matijevic to keep their side at a competitive distance.
There were no real runs but Athleta were gradually moving away from their adversaries who made frequent changes on court. Athleta added two more triples from Naudi and Steve Schembri and the champions had Shoults with a second trey. At the halfway stage of the game, Athleta had built up a 48-36 advantage.
After the break it was expected that Siggiewi would make a better effort to eat away at their arrears. The two sides started with triples - Shoults third - and an immediate reply from Steve Schembri.
For some time, Athleta held on to their lead until Adrian Micallef found his scoring touch for Siggiewi who edged nearer but at the end of the session Athleta still held a good advantage with a 62-54 favourable score.
In the final period Steve Schembri found space for a third triple and a little later Alan Borg was ousted from the match for his second anti-sporting foul and Athleta continued with an 8-0 run as they bounced clear of their rivals. The champions manouevres to get back in the match were not successful and said sank his second triple to seal Siggiewis fate even though there was time left on the clock.
Points at either end did not have any bearing on the final result and at the end of the game it was Matthew Shoults who was sent off for remarks passed in an Athleta free throw occasion.
After the match Athleta celebrated their victory when the Detur Managing Director Sinan Onem presented the Athleta captain Michael Naudi with their trophy.
