Hockey: Qormi Win Challenge Cup after dramatic penalty shootout

Malta Independent Thursday, 11 November 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Last Sunday’s final was a tight match which produced an extremely exciting ending. In fact, Qormi won 6-5 on penalties.

During normal time Qormi pressed forward but Young Stars marshalled their forces brilliantly using the counter attack as their main weapon – a tactic which enabled them to create chances of their own.

Qormi finished on a high note forcing several short corners towards the end of the match but could not break the deadlock and the game went into extra time.

After a quiet first period of extra time Qormi again forced two short corners, but to no avail.

Penalty hits were taken with Qormi missing the first one and Young Stars missing the fifth sending the shoot out into a sudden death situation.

It was still equal after six attempts but while Qormi scored their seventh Young Stars had theirs saved sending the Qormi faithful into jubilation.

3rd/4th place match

Rabat 3

Hotsticks 1

In the match for third and fourth place, Rabat beat Hotsticks by three goals to one after leading 1-0 at half time through a Josef Antonelli effort.

Charlot Antonelli put them further ahead in the 57th minute but Hotsticks hit back a minute later through Simon Baldacchino.

In the 64th minute Rabat were awarded a penalty which Charlot Antonelli converted and they then controlled proceedings until the final whistle.
