The final score does not reflect the true difference between the two teams as Mgarr were dominant for long stretches throughout the game.

They were denied by some good saves by Balzan keeper Jordi Galea and twice by the woodwork.

Mgarr lead the standings on 10 points from four games while Balzan are still pointless from three games.

The first period was a one-way traffic affair as all the actions were created my Mgarr. After only two minutes David Vassallo missed the upright from inside the area after a Gabriel Vella through ball.

Galea then came to his side’s rescue on three consecutive actions. First he saved on Vassallo after a Gabriel Vella through ball, he turned to a corner a shot by Luke Vella after a cross by Vassallo and then saved a shot from outside the area by Gabriel Vella after being put through by Daniel Law.

Mgarr kept insisting and Nick Abela served Law in the area only for the latter to miss the bar by inches.

Luke Vella served Gabriel Vella with a back pass on the edge of the area and the ball hit the base of the upright from his shot with Galea completely beaten.

Very few were the actions worthy of note after the restart with the first two being created by Mgarr. Stefan Vella served Vassallo with a through ball and Galea was forced to come out of his charge and kick the ball away to safety and Vassallo served Luke Vella on the left flank who crossed the ball in the area but it found no takers.

In Balzan’s first attack in the 47th minute they opened the score. Shatazan Zarb served Andrea Privitera in the area and he was tripped by Mgarr keeper Renald Vassallo. Zarb converted from the spot with a hard grounder.

After this unmerited setback, Mgarr kept trying and Law served Vassallo in the area with a cross from the right flank and Galea denied him with a diving save. Minutes later the woodwork came to Balzan’s rescue once again when the ball hit the upright with Galea beaten from a shot by Gabriel Vella after a Luke Vella cross from the right flank. 

In the 58th minute Mgarr deservedly equalised when Joey Galea served substitute Bjorn Camilleri in the area with a long throw-in from the left flank and he scored with a low shot.

Hardly a minute later, Mgarr scored a second goal with a choral move between three players - Gabriel Vella served Vassallo on the right flank who in turn crossed the ball in the area to Luke Vella who shot past Galea.
