San Gwann strengthened their top placing following this narrow win against Mellieha and are on maximum points from six games while Mellieha are in third position on 14 points from seven games. The game was watched by a sizeable crowd at the newly synthetic-surfaced Zebbug ground.

Mellieha were the first to threaten as Neil Cauchi served Jan Magro in the area but San Gwann keeper Dean Sciberras foiled him with a timely sortie. After Magro was fouled outside the area, Sciberras saved in two attempts from the free kick by Jonathan Cutajar.

San Gwann reacted by creating three actions in a row. After a well-taken flag kick by Julian Camilleri the ball was cleared on the line from a shot by Stefan Stayonavic. From another flag kick by Julian Camilleri havoc was created in Mellieha’s area but the ball was somehow cleared to safety and after Kristen Borg was fouled outside the area Mellieha keeper Joseph Caruana saved in two attempts from Robert Camilleri’s free kick. 

In two consecutive actions, Mellieha were denied by Sciberras. First he dived at Luke Camilleri’s feet after he was put through by Julian Agius, and then he dived and saved to a corner a shot by the same player.

In the first action after the resumption, Jacob Micallef served Julian Camilleri with a cross from the left flank but Caruana neutralised the high ball, at the other end, Jonathan Cutajar, after dribbling his way past two defenders entered the area and Sciberras denied with a diving save.

San Gwann reacted and Zack Camilleri served Nickolai Muscat with a square pass but he missed the upright from outside the area. Muscat then served Julian Camilleri with a through ball in the area and Caruana dived at his feet and smothered the ball.  

In the 64th minute San Gwann opened the score when Zack Camilleri dribbled past two opponents and scored with a hard grounder from the right edge of the area.

Four minutes later Kristen Borg should have doubled the score when he was put through in the area but, with only Caruana to beat, he drove out.

In a last gasp move by Mellieha Jacob Farrugia served Jack Vella with a square pass but Sciberras saved his effort from outside the area in two attempts.
