Argentina striker Julio Alcorse scored in the 33rd minute and it proved to be the winner for Marsaxlokk against first division side Mqabba yesterday.

The southern seasiders were provided by some decent opposition by Mqabba who showed they have enough material to make a strong challenge for promotion to the Premier League next season.

Marsaxlokk had current league top scorer Alfred Effiong on the bench until he entered as a substitute in the 71st minute.

Mqabba had a positive six match run ended. They had Mazitelli of Brazil missing while striker John Paul Muscat failed to make it to the starting line-up, not even as a substitute.

It was a balanced match which was decided by that Alcorse goal on 33 minutes. He received a cross from Kokavessis and beat goalkeeper Calleja with a good header.

In the second half, Marsaxlokk were slightly better than their opponents, but there was only one action worthy of note.

That was in the 62nd minute when goalie Calleja denied Kokavessis, after the latter was served with a cross by Alcorse.
