Hibernians FC 4
Pieta’ Hotspurs 0
Hibernians put on a fine second half performance to rout Pieta’ Hotspurs to the tune of four goals to nil and progress to the second round of the competition.
Hibernians-Pieta’ was the fifth match to determine who would qualify for the second round.
Hibs started the stronger of the sides and after 14 minutes should have gone ahead when Kristensen released Farrugia who put his shot over from a lone position.
Hibs took the lead on 41 minutes when a corner by Tristan Caruana found Farrugia who headed home with ease. Pieta’ reacted on 51 minutes when a free kick by Leighton Grech was just missed at the near post by Lijeskic. Two minutes later, Hibs threatened with a Cohen cross which went across the goal area but no one was on hand to conclude.
On 63 minutes, Hibernians made sure of their passage to the second round when they doubled. A corner by Tristan Caruana found Pearson who fired home from close range. On 71 minutes, Hibernians made it three when Herrera found Farrugia who slotted home past Montfort to notch up his brace.
Pieta reacted with two chances coming the way of Muscat and Pisani but Muscat was equal in the first header and a shot ended just wide. Hibernians could have made it four on 76 minutes when Cohen saw his effort cleared off the line by Mifsud and minutes later the same Cohen hit the woodwork.
Another chance went incredibly begging on 85 minutes when a cross by Herrera found McManus who stepped on the ball. But the English forward redeemed himself seconds later when he cheekily lobbed over Montfort to seal Hibs’ poker.
