On Saturday Marsa C.C took on Krishna C.C in the MCA Winter League.
Marsa won the toss and elected to field. Dave Borg and Simon Mayeri opened the batting for Krishna. Borg was first to go scoring six runs from five balls before being bowled. Mayeri went on to make 16 runs before being caught.
Joy Ghoseroy played the longest innings for his team retiring after30 balls and returning towards the end of the innings. He top scored with 25 runs.
Justin Thorne made 18 runs from 17 balls before he was out LBW. Andy Lenard made 24 runs from 17 balls before being bowled.
The Krishna team were bowled out for 122 runs.
For Marsa an excellent over from Ronnie Sacco earned him four wickets from four balls which is a first in any league game in Malta. Jai Kumar, Gordon Hewitt and Sarfraz Ali all chipped in with two wickets each.
In reply Frank Spiteri and Mark G. Sacco opened the batting. Sacco was unfortunately out to the first ball he faced.
From that point on it was downhill for the team that toppled the holders the previous week. Only Spiteri managed to make it to double figures scoring 16 runs.
In all there were five ducks in the innings and three other scores under five runs. The Marsa team were bowled out for 48 runs.
One must mention the great catch taken by John Rusher to dismiss a potential match winner in Ronnie Sacco. Rusher had to run forward and then dive to take the catch. Sacco watched in dismay while the Krishna team celebrated.
For the Krishna team Justin Thorne managed to take four wickets, Dave Borg took two while Nowell Khosla, Darren Grech, Ravi Kumar and Richard Rogers all took one.
The game brought the close of the first round. Even with the loss the Marsa team still hold first place with 12 points, Melita Betfair second with nine points and Krishna third with nine points.
Next Saturday the second game between the Malta Select team versus the Combined XI will take place – a 40-over game starting at 10am. The academy/nursery will be from 9am till 10.30am
