It was confirmed yesterday that Maltese referees Marco Borg and Christopher Lautier will referee in Scotland this weekend. They will be accompanied by two officials.

The Maltese officials and their two assistants, have taken the number of referees covering matches to seven.

Malta FA CEO Bjorn Vassallo confirmed to The Malta Independent that Maltese officials will be controlling matches in Scotland this weekend.

The website STV Sport yesterday quoted a spokesperson for Malta’s FA as saying: “We are ready to assist the Scottish FA. We also had a similar problem in Malta 20 years ago, when we had to approach the English FA for officials.”

When asked if they would be able to provide any more referees to cover the call-offs, the Malta FA said they thought it would be unlikely. “It will be very difficult for us to spare other referees,” they said. “The SFA wants Class One officials and we don’t have many to spare.”
