This weekend saw the Malta Volleyball Association return to a full set of fixtures after having to sideline their domestic league last week due to the Friendhship Beach Volley games played against their Sicilian counterparts.

In the Men’s Preliminary Round, Valletta dominated their match against Mgarr despite being shorn of a number of key players, and cruised to a 3-0 victory with scores of 25 -16 , 25 - 10 , and 25 – 10. Valletta were consistent in their attack and their good reception gave them the possibility to vary their play and use both setters. Despite their stong attacks which came mainly through Robert Balzan and Paul Tonna, Valletta did tend to make a number of service errors, particularly in the begining opf the second set. However they cruised to their 4th Preliminary Round victory and seem to be well concentrated for their forthcoming important match against Defenders Aloysians. The young Mgarr side, on their part, found the going tough and had too many unforced errors to allow them to get into the game.

In the weekend’s second men’s match, Sliema won their first points by getting the better of Iklin in a four set game. Iklin were very strong in the first set which they won 25-17 and the second set could have gone anywhere with Sliema eventually winning it 25-23. The latter eventually settled down and were more convincing in the next two sets to win them 25-18 and 25-20 respectively.

In the Ladies 1st Division, Depiro Flyers found no real resistance from a young Play Volley Galaxy side to beat them in three straight sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-10). Playvolley did fight in the first part of each set but eventually Flyers took control of the game. Ann-Marie Attard and Louise Vella were the better players for Depiro.

In the second 1st Division match, Fleur de Lys managed to ruffle Hibs’ feathers by taking the first set 26-24, but the Paolites turned the tables and won the next three sets convincingly (25-18; 25-9 and 25-17). Paola used strong sevices and attacks to show that they have no intention of giving in to any new contenders who may attempt to prise away the league championship from their grasp.

In the Ladies’ 2nd Division, Flyers beat TGIF 3-0 (25-15; 25-5; 25-19). They controlled the game throughout and gave younger players like Naomi Borg, Stephanie Grech, Stephanie Zerafa and libero Kim Grech more playing opportunities.

Southend 2 also won their game against Paola U’18 by 3sets to 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) to maintain their lead at the top of the 2nd Division.
