The Malta Amateur Athletics Association has the pleasure to announce that the athletes shown hereunder are to be honoured for being foremost in their category during the past season.

This year the Association wrote another glorious chapter in its long history, participating for the first time as a combined team representing Malta in the Third League Athletics Championship for European Nations, hosted at the Matthew Micallef St John Athletics Stadium.

This flagship event in athletics produced for our country an enviable team spirit that helped in no small measure to place Malta in mid-table, in the ninth position out of fifteen competing European nations.

Leading that team as captain was Mario Bonello, a long time stalwart of Athletics Malta, an Olympian and a familiar face and presence at the Games for Small Nations. His exploits at the Championships, his leadership and example, has inspired the Council in its choice to nominate him as the Athlete of the Year.

Complimenting this decision the MAAA Council deems it fit to honour Rebecca Camilleri as the Female Athlete of the Year, following her magnificent achievement during the National Championships, when this lion-heart managed to surmount the odds and establish a new National Record in the Long Jump with a clearance of 6metres and 22 centimetres.

Females: Senior - Rebecca Camilleri, Junior - Francesca Xuereb, Intermediate - Marija Sciberras, Jana Pace Cocks, Youth -Thalia Massa, Cadet - Nicole Gatt, Athlete of the year - Rebecca Camilleri
