Kaisa Makarainen of Finland shot cleanly to beat Miriam Gossner of Germany and win her first ever World Cup biathlon yesterday.

Makarainen won the first sprint of the season in 22 minutes, 42.1 seconds. Gossner hit all 10 targets but finished 18.7 seconds back.

Darya Domracheva of Belarus missed one shot and had to settle for third, winning the bronze medal 47.1 seconds back.
