Ryan Lochte beat Austrian Olympian Markus Rogan to win the 200-yard individual medley at the U.S. Short Course National Championships yesterday.

Two-time Beijing Olympics gold medalist Lochte came from behind in the 200 IM to defeat Rogan at Ohio State University's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in 1 minute, 42.6 seconds, more than 2 .5 seconds off his American record. Rogan was 1:42.94.

The only meet record was set by Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, who won the women's 200 IM in 53.47.

Rogan led the 200 IM through the butterfly and backstroke segments before Lochte pulled within 0.34 seconds on the breaststroke and then won with a finishing 24.91 in the freestyle to Rogan's 25.68.

"I don't usually swim to get second," Rogan said. "I was confused because I was ahead at the third (leg) and I expected to be behind (Lochte)."

Lochte did not expect to be in front early because he wasn't wearing the half-body suit other swimmers had on.

"I'm only wearing a Speedo," he said. "I don't have a suit. I don't have that natural speed like all the other people do. Of course, I'm going to be behind."

Lochte clocked 19.78 seconds to finish eighth in the 50 freestyle, which was won by Nathan Adrian in 19.45.

Lochte said he is feeling fatigued from training for the World Championships in Dubai in two weeks.

"I'm still really tired. I've been working really hard," he said. "I had a good start. I missed my wall and I didn't have a good second 25 (yards) underwater so it messed me up."

He is scheduled to compete in the 100 backstroke today and the 200 backstroke on the final day of competition tomorrow.
