Ted Ligety has captured a World Cup giant slalom, while U.S. teammate Bode Miller finished way back in 27th place.

Ligety flew through the course in a combined time of 2 minutes, 37.67 seconds Sunday, edging Kjetil Jansrud of Norway by 0.82 seconds. Marcel Hirscher of Austria finished third.

After a slow opening run, Miller switched skis, but that didn't help as he finished 8.68 seconds behind Ligety.

Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht returned to racing and wound up in 21st place. Albrecht had a horrific crash nearly two years ago during a downhill training run at Kitzbuehel, Austria, that left him with brain and lung injuries.

Defending champ Carlo Janka of Switzerland missed a gate in the final run and didn't finish.

Ligety and Miller were among those who skied off the course Saturday, going out in the difficult Screech Owl section. That wasn’t weighing on them as they went through that part of the course yesterday.

“Yesterday was frustrating, but that’s ski racing,” said Ligety, who won the overall World Cup GS title last winter for the second time in three years.

Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht made his return to World Cup racing and was in 17th after the opening run. Albrecht crashed nearly two years ago during a horrific downhill training run at Kitzbuehel, Austria, that left him in a medically induced coma with brain and lung injuries.

The crowd gave Albrecht a rousing ovation after he crossed the finish line.

“It’s amazing, amazing to see him back,” Swiss teammate Didier Cuche said.

Benjamin Raich of Austria skipped the race with a bothersome back, while one of the favorites, Jean-Baptiste Grange of France, missed a gate and was done for the day. Swiss skier Carlo Janka, the defending champion at Beaver Creek and reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, was 1.45 seconds behind Ligety.
