An injury time disputed penalty gave league leaders St George’s a very precious win over ten-man Mosta yesterday at the Hamrun Stadium.

The match never reached high standrads and only came to life in the last quarter of the match.

St George’s are now firmly on top of the table, still unbeaten and with a handsome four-point leadover second placed Mqabba and Lija.

Mosta did not deserve to leave the pitch empty handed as they had the lions’ share of attackes, in a match which was dominated by both defences.

Mosta spearheaded in attack by a brilliant Gilbert Martin could only go near with long distance efforts from William Camenzuli and Marg Briggs.

Mosta were dealt a severe blow when they lost William Camenzuli fifteen minutes from time after receiving a second yellow.

Mosta continued to push forward in the last minutes and even went close with shots from Briggs and substitute Lyden Micalled who forced the Saints’ goalkeeper to a difficult save.

But Mosta were punished in stoppage time when a Ruiz shot appeared to hit Alex Cini’s arm, with the referee opting for the penalty, from which Glenn Bonello made no mistake with a precise grounder that gave Debono no chance to save.
