Football – Bank Of Valletta third division: Attard setback for Siggiewi

Siggiewi suffered a setback to their promotion hopes when they lost to Attard by a solitary goal 12 minutes from the end.

However, it was a merited win for Attard, who also hit the posts twice during the second half.

Siggiewi dominated the early stages of the game with Roderick Farrugia seeing his shot going wide. After 26 minutes, the same Farrugia again went close with another good effort.

It was in the 61st minute that Attard were unlucky not to take the lead when a Kayne Said header hit the post.

Ten minutes later, it was Jean Claude Cachia who again hit the post with another header.

But the same Said fared better on the 78th minute when he scored the goal that gave the three points to his side.

Qrendi 1

Mdina K 4

Mdina Knights maintained their healthy mid-table placing with an impressive 4-1 win against Qrendi.

Their victory matured in the second half after Qrendi had finished the first half 1-0 ahead.

It was Davide Mula who scored for them in the 40th minute. They also went close to score another one before the first half ended through Aaron Pendry.

In the second half, the Knights were a transformed side and after Trevor Fenech went close twice, it was Peter Grima who scored to level matters.

The same Grima scored again on the 64th minute to put his side ahead.

From then on, the Knights never looked back and, with Qrendi failing to make a reaction, they added further goals through Lars Johansson for a comfortable win.

Section B

Fgura 1

Gozo 1

A keen and balanced match in which defences were on top of the respective front lines.

The result left both teams near the bottom end of the table with Gozo on 10 points and Fgura on seven.

It was Fgura who had the better start and they opened the scoring after just 10 minutes through a Nazzareno Abela header.

Fgura were unlucky not to add a second goal when Vincent Camilleri hit the post from a freekick.

Gozo replied with an equaliser on the 35th minute through a fine effort from Joseph Cefai.

Fgura again took the initiative in the second half and went close through an effort from Lydon Vella which was well saved by Jonathan Xuereb.

The same Fgura also went near to scoring a winner on the 80th minute when a fine shot from Matthew Schembri just missed the target.

Pembroke A 2

Kirkop 0

Kirkop failed to maintain the pace with the teams at the top after being gunned down by Pembroke.

The latter won the match in the second half with two goals from Laurent Farrugia. It was their third victory of the season and now have 10 points. Kirkop are fourth, just ahead of Pembroke, but on 12 points.

Pembroke took the initiative in the early stages and went close through Robert Zammit whose shot was deviated to corner by Formosa.

At the other end, Kirkop also threatened through an Andrew Xerri shot which went just over.

In the second half, Kirkop again were dangerous when Jean Pierre Debattista saved a freekick from Busuttil.

Pembroke took the lead on the 64th minute when Laurent Farrugia advanced to beat Formosa from an angle and the same player made it 2-0 four minutes later.
