Bottom of the table side Msida SJ made one of the biggest upsets so far this season beating the highly fancied Balzan Youths by three clear goals.

It was a rather stunning performance by Msida who registered their first victory of the season, and also inflicted the first defeat on Balzan Youths, who missed a great opportunity to go secong in the table behind St George’s.

The Saints benefitted from this result as they now hold a strong four-point lead at the top.

Although surprising Msida’s victory was a more than deserved one. Balzan were very erratic and well below par and Msida pounced on every possible occassion to score three goals in one match, after having only scored one goal in the previous eight competitive matches.

The inclusion of Alinho gave Msida a new lease of life, whilst Curtis was there at the right moment to score a second half brace.

Karl Saliba had put Msida ahead on 26 minutes, and balzan had their best moment at the start of the second half missing some easy chances.

But then came Martyn Curtis’ brace as he finished off in style some polished work by Alinho.

In a highly entertaining match Melita and Pieta shared four goals to gain a point each and consolidate their mid-table position.

Melita were the better team in the first half building a two-goal lead with goals from Luke Micallef and Kane Micallef.

Pieta stormed forward in the second half and Robson Luiz Bandeira was their hero scoring a brace to give Pieta a deserved point.

In between Bandeira’s goals, Pieta were also unlucky when a Sheldon Grech dipper slammed against the crossbar.
