In the ladies First Division, Paola Hibs Candy were too strong for Playvolley Galaxy while Toyota Playvolley had the better of Klikk Southend by three sets to two. Attard Tenovar beat Ilkin in the men’s preliminary round while Mgarr were awarded a walk-over by Sliema.
The last match of the weekend between Klikk Southend and Toyota Playvolley saw the latter beat the Southenders by the odd set in five.
The Klikk Southend players got off to a very good start, being very well organised on reception and defence and making the most of team captain Maria Costa's sets to win the first set at 25-21.
However the story was completely different in the second set when Toyota Playvolley, ably led by Maria Demicoli and Diandra Caruana, easily managed to bring home the set at 25-11.
The story seemed to repeat itself in the third set when everything seemed to go Playvolley's way particularly through the good work on block by Yana Cutajar. With the score at 18-5 in Playvolley's favour, Klikk Southend coach Kris Croker called his second and final time-out which seemed to give new energy to his players.
Despite their strong reaction, especially by Elaine Vella and libero Lorraine Soler, Klikk lost the set 18-25.
The new vibe found by the Southend players at the end of the third set proved to be an important morale booster and the consistent performances on attack by new Klikk Southend additions Daniela Muscat and Whitney West saw the Southenders bring the set home at 25-20 and forced the game to a fifth and final set.
Despite Klikk Southend's best effort to maintain their positive run, Toyota Playvolley's experience prevailed to win the tie-break 15-9.
Before the start of the game a minute's silence was observed in honour of Ms. Sammut, who was killed on the eve of the game.
In the previous match, reigning champions Paola Hibs Candy were far too strong for Playvolley Galaxy and were clearly in control throughout the match, winning the sets comfortably 25-11, 25-8 and 25-11 for a 3-0 scoreline.
In the men’s preliminary round match between two newcomers, Attard Tenovar never gave Iklin time to settle into the game and convincingly beat them 3-0 in identical set scores of 25-16.
Other results from U-15 games were: Flyers vs Playvolley: 2-1; Southend Red vs Southend Pink: 0-2; Flyers U’13 vs Playvolley: 0-2; Paola vs Southend Pink:2-0.
