Sampdoria yesterday confirmed that an agreement with Milan was in sight over the sale of Italy midfielder and striker Antonio Cassano.

The Genoa-based club’s sporting director Doriano Tosi yesterday indicated that there were just a few details to iron out.

“We have been working on this deal for some time and we are very close to a conclusion,” he was quoted as saying.

It’s understood that Sampdoria, who unsuccessfully tried to rescind Cassano’s contract earlier this month, will allow the player to officially move for nothing.

However, Doria may have to pay just over €1.6m to Real Madrid in order to get rid of the Italian international.

Under the terms of the deal when they signed Cassano from the Spanish giants, they agreed to pay Real €5m should the player be sold.

As a result, whispers suggest that Doria, Cassano and Milan will all pay a third of that amount in order to satisfy the Liga giants.

Should Cassano put pen to paper on a Milan deal tomorrow, he will officially become a Rossonero in January once the transfer window has opened.
