After 18 years teaching at St Edward’s College, I was very pleased to see your article on the Malta Independent of Saturday 11 December entitled “St Edward’s College back to their old ways with a bang”.

However, your correspondent’’s statement, that the College  “has reached its zenith some years ago, hardly making the headlines anymore, at least not in athletics” is incorrect.

Cross Country has always been one of the College’s traditions. In the past 12 years our College achieved eight aggregate titles.

Most probably your correspondent was misled by the fact that for a number of years, the Private and Independent Schools had their own competition organised by the MSSF (Malta Students Sports Federation).

It is only in the last three scholastic years that the MSSF has joined forces with the MAAA, to have one event for all the schools.

Having said that, the most important thing ...is not to win but to take part. Just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.
