Malta Independent Monday, 27 December 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Former Valletta FC striker Charles Zammit passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 66. Zammit played for the Valletta club for four seasons between 1965 and 1969, scoring 12 goals in 36 games.

He will be remembered as a Valletta hero for being the protagonist when Valletta won the Cassar Cup twice during a difficult period when the team was going through a transitional phase.

In their first triumph in the Cassar Cup in 1966, he scored a hat trick during the 3-1 victory against Sliema Wanderers. In their second final in 1968, Valletta once again defeated Sliema Wanderers, winning 2-1 this time, and Zammit scored the winning goal during that match.

Besides Valletta FC, Charles Zammit also played for Hamrun Spartans for one season and for Zebbug R. in the 1969/70 season, when he helped the Zebbug team get promoted from the Second to the First Division.
