I find it rather odd that Daphne Caruana Galizia should be so against our nuns running orphanages in Malta. It is one of the last welfare niches left to them in our island state after being eased out from their previous role in our public hospitals.
Looking after and raising our young abandoned, or unfortunate children is a job of care they do supremely well, inspired as they are by higher things than that of earning their daily bread. We should count ourselves lucky to have them and strive to make their work easier.
After all we gladly accept them running some schools and old people’s homes. I wonder if Mrs Caruana Galizia finds this also objectionable.
The presence of communities of dedicated nuns is a treasured mark of our precious continuing Christian culture.
We are blessed to have them.
