Birkirkara won the first edition of the Charles Abela Memorial Cup on Wednesday in front of a big crowd at the Charles Abela Memorial Stadium. The Stripes beat Zejtun Corinthians 4-0 and lost to Mosta FC 7-6 on penalties to finish top of the table with four points.
Zejtun beat hosts Mosta 2-1 to finish second with three points. Mosta were a much improved side in the third and final match as they held a strong Birkirkara side to a 0-0 draw. But the Blues won the penalty shoot-out 7-6.
The tournament was played in a very jovial atmosphere as the new stands were completely full, especially with the Zejtun fans who were accompanied by a small band and colourful streamers.
At the end of the night's play, Carlos Abela, youngest son of the late Mosta FC President Charles Abela, presented the winning trophy to Birkirkara captain Alan Tabone, as well as mementoes to the participating teams.
Mosta FC thanks Nectar Group of companies for their sponsorship of the tournament.
