Motor Sport: Hubert Camilleri Clinches his 11th Malta Hillclimb and Sprint championship

The 2010 Motorsport year has drawn to a close with the final instalment of the Island Car Club Championship which took place in Gnejna.

This was a going to be a hotly contested race as the championship in various classes was still open to many contenders especially that of group six cars were Camilleri in his Got To Be Glued Chevron B43 has shown his skill not only in his driving which by now is know to all, but also in administering all situations that arise during the events by keeping calm and focused despite the stake at hold which, due to problems Camilleri faced during the season, left all or none to the last event.

Runs started on a swift pace indeed, with Zach Zammit posting a 35.380 in his Jagger Ralt, followed by Steve Zammit Cutajar and Jason Muscat at 35.800 and 36.456 respectively. In the meantime Mark Galea, David Galea and James Dunford were leading Groups 3, 2 and 1 respectively, all of them in Subaru Imprezas.

As the road gummed down, Zammit managed to post times in the 34 second zone, and managed to maintain his lead through to the end, while Zammit Cutajar followed at 35.103 with Hubert Camilleri placing third at 35.300, who, having made a tactical decision to skip the first run, found that the decision paid off as he had now garnered enough incident free points to win an incredible 11th championship.

In the other classes Jason Muscat placed first in Group 5, Mark Galea and David Galea maintained their positions in groups 3 and 2, while James Dunford topped group 1.

This year’s season was notable for the influx of new events, the most significant of which was the return of the Mtahleb hill climb.

The Island Car Club was also contracted with the running of several national events the part year, such as the Valletta Grand Prix, Paqpaqli ghal l-Istrina and the Gozo Grand Sprint, further elevating the profile of Maltese Motorsports.
