The competition resumes this evening with the first match in connection with the 13th round of games – the Hamrun S.-Floriana encounter – scheduled to be played at the Victor Tedesco Stadium in Hamrun starting at 7.30pm.
The Spartans are presently occupying fourth place in the standings on 19 points, one ahead of the Greens who have 18.
In their last encounters, Hamrun Spartans emerged 3-2 winners against Sliema while Floriana overcame Marsaxlokk 3-0.
The two teams are pressing hard this season for a place among the Top Six when the Second Phase arrives and it is evident that they will be eyeing a further three points this evening to consolidate their position.
They are aware that even a draw might not suffice as the clubs following them further down the table can quickly come back into the reckoning with a victory at the weekend.
Floriana have made some changes to their squad as they have signed two new strikers who will probably be taking the place of American Michael Mecerod and one of the two Bulgarians, Kiril Dzhorov or Ivailo Sokolov.
The newcomers are Dragomir Dragonov, another Bulgarian who had played in Malta already with Balzan, Senglea and Marsaxlokk, and Daniel Nwoke, a Nigerian who has also already played in Malta with Birkirkara, Naxxar and Msida St Joseph.
Hamrun are only expected to make a few additions to their squad. They have had a successful four months and confirmed they are a strong outfit after their good performances in last Sunday’s Christmas Cup where they beat Birkirkara and lost narrowly against Italian Serie B side Padova.
A keen and entertaining match is anticipated this evening.
