The Malta Stock Exchange Index closed marginally lower on Friday, shedding three points, or less than 0.1 per cent, and closed at the 3,694.277 level on moderate volume of 109,174 shares across 37 deals.
Giving the day’s best performance were shares of HSBC Bank Malta plc, which added 4c, 1.3 per cent, to close at €3.200 on continued heavy volume of 75,526 shares across 16 deals. On Thursday, HSBC stock traded on volume of 30,937 shares and slipped 1c.
Bank of Valletta plc shares, on the other hand, finished lower, losing 7c, or 1.9 per cent, in twelve trades for a total of 12,945 shares, to close at €3.700.
Suffering the day’s biggest loss was Loqus Holdings plc, whose stock, which often trades in volatile trading ranges, suffered a precipitous drop in value, shedding 4c, or 20.0 per cent, to close at €0.160 in a single trade of 300 shares.
Shares in the local postal operator, MaltaPost plc, also fell in the session, dropping 1c, or 1.0 per cent, and closed at €0.990.
Other equities to trade in the session, yet closed unchanged, were International Hotel Investments plc, which ended the day at €0.900 on volume of 4,340 across two deals, and Malta International Airport plc, which finished at €1.660 in a single trade of 2,200 shares.
Trading in the corporate bond market, after returning to normal trading levels on Thursday, again reverted to thin trading, as an equivalent €41,388 nominal across 9 deals was transacted. Two of the five corporate issues to trade in the day finished higher while a single bond ended lower. The 6.2% Mizzi Org. Fin. plc € 2016-2019 bond performed well by adding €0.75, or 0.7 per cent, and closed at €105.00 in two trades for a total of €3,900 nominal, while the 4.8% Bank of Valletta Plc Sub € 2020 bond closed marginally lower, shedding €0.10, or 0.1 per cent, to close at €102.90 in a single deal of €5,000 nominal.
