Former president and prime minister Eddie Fenech Adami seems to have taken it upon himself to lead the anti-divorce brigade by taking part in public discussions on the divorce issue.

Dr Fenech Adami went as far as to proclaim that we in Malta should “be proud” that Malta together with the Philippines, do not have divorce legislation! So according to this “self-righteous” man all the other countries of the world should be “ashamed” (the opposite of “proud”!) for giving their citizens the civil right to re-marry once their marriage has broken down completely!

Labour MP Evarist Bartolo has hit back at Dr Fenech Adami by revealing that the Fenech Adami family has obtained three marriage annulments, a luxury I am sure that the vast majority of Maltese and Gozitan families in which there have been marital breakdowns, have not had!

If anything, Dr Fenech Adami should have learnt from the marriage breakdowns he has witnessed at close quarters, the trauma which the people involved go through. He should therefore appreciate the fact that those who cannot, or do not succeed, in obtaining an annulment are as much human as those who do manage to get an annulment and hence can re-marry, the former need to have the possibility of obtaining a divorce, something our former President of all Maltese and Gozitan citizens, wants to deny them the opportunity that became possible in his own family!
