Social Dimension of gas

Żminijietna – Voice of the Left shares the same views of the GWU, UHM and the Forum, which all recognise that the increase in energy prices, including that of gas, fuel, electricity and water is leading to a reduction in the standard of living of many families. European statistics show that the phenomenon of ‘fuel poverty’ is increasing at an alarming rate, and Malta is not an exception.

The current situation in the provision of domestic gas is mediocre and privatisation of this sector has resulted in higher prices. It’s not fair that the government, together with MRA, are trying to present another picture as there was a reduction in the price of gas, when we all know that prices had gone up three times as much. MRA should be more consistent with its role as a regulator.

The fact that the distribution of gas from Easygas Ltd has not yet begun, leads us to believe that their present supply of gas is priced at the old market price. MRA should ensure that the price of gas reflects the time of importation in relation to the market price, so as to protect consumers.

On the other hand government should change its anti-social direction and follow the example of other countries, such as Argentina where the Government of President Kirchner embraces a policy that subsidises the use of household gas, while retaining on a commercial profit making level that for commercial use.
