In a weekend reserved for female matches, Paola Hibs Candy brushed off the challenge of Golden Girls to march on to the forthcoming round of the Fr. Parnis National Cup.

In the First Division Flyers Depiro regained the second spot by beating FDL 3-1. Their second team now also lead the Second Division when they too beat B’Kara 3-1.

Division One

Depiro Flyers-FDL 3-1

(21-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-16)

Depiro Flyers managed to return to winning ways and regained the second spot in the First Division League table but they were still not at their best and conceded the first set to Fleur de Lys.

Fleur de Lys showed an improvement over their last outings and managed to win the first set 25-21. Depiro could not afford to drop any more points and played much better in the second set, winning it quite easily.

The third and fourth sets were more balanced and Fleur de Lys tried to get back into the game but Depiro managed to maintain the lead in both to win the game 3-1.

Fr Parnis National Cup

Paola H. Candy-Golden G. 3-0

( 25-14; 25-13; 25-14)

In a match between the current league and National Cup holders and a team composed of a number of ex national team players who have reunited to participate in the National Cup, Paola Hibs confirmed that they are the team of the moment by beating the Golden Girls in three straight sets.

The latter showed thay they are still skillful players but lacked the much needed match practice to put any real pressure on Poala.

Evergreen Carmen Gauci of Paola may be one of the most veteran players on the court but was still the best blocker, while Alison Borg’s performance was better than that of her last outings, even if she is still not fully recovered from her injury. Keeping their mistakes to a minimum, Hibs were in complete control of the game to cruise through to the next round.

Ladies Division Two

Flyers Depiro II-B’Kara 3-1

(25-14; 23-25;25-17; 25-14)

Depiro’s second team won their fifth match out of five to lead the second division with maximum points.

They did, however, give away the first set in a match which never reached any high levels.

One must commend the numerous B’Kara supporters who backed their team throughout with the waving of flags, beating of drums and humming vuvuzelas.
