Malta Independent Friday, 28 January 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

On Saturday the Winter League continued, a later start then scheduled due to the overnight rain.

The ground condition made it hard for both teams especially in the first innings, by the second innings the ground had started to dry and the ball was moving better along the ground. The Marsa C.C team took on Melita Betfair C.C.

The Marsa team batted first with Javed Shah and Ronnie Sacco putting up a 51 run partnership before Sacco was caught by Tony Slater for 22 runs.

Shah went on to retire scoring 34 runs including one six and a four. Derek Ali went in and looked like tearing the bowling attack apart after hitting two sixes in an over only to be bowled in the following over. Ali ended up with 16 runs.

Frank Spiteri had a let off when he had five runs on the board and was saved by the umpire calling a no ball when he was caught. Spiteri went on to make 14 runs before being stumped by John Grima. Tony Azzopardi scored eight runs. The final over of the innings was an incredible over from Chris Naudi who took two wickets and made it a maiden.

The not out batspersons were Sarfraz Ali and Nadia Gosney. Andy Naudi was the main wicket taker with three wickets. Kevin Krishna and Tony Slater took a wicket each.

Melita Betfair were looking to keep their winning run. The innings had a top start with both opening batsmen retiring. Andy Naudi scoring 36 runs and John Grima 19 runs.

Two ducks followed, one batmen made four runs another six runs and another duck. The game just kept swinging either way when a batsmen was going in and then shortly after changing again when he was walking out.

Kevin Krishna (17 not out) and Jim Heasman ( four not out) were facing the last over needing 12 runs to win. Derek Ali held his nerve while bowling and the batsmen could only manage six runs. Marsa were the winners.

Tony Azzopardi was the main wicket taker for Marsa with three wickets. Gordon Hewitt bowled extremely well and only had 14 runs taken of his five overs and took one wicket.

With the win the Marsa C.C earned seven points which has sealed the league for them with one game to play. This is the first time the Marsa team have won this title.

Next Saturday the Marsa C.C take on Krishna C.C. In the morning from 9am till 10.30am the academy/nursery will take place.
