Brief Encounter: Netty Skok-Farrugia

Malta Independent Saturday, 5 February 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Netty Skok-Farrugia is well known for her organizational abilities and joie de vivre. An eternal optimist she is in fact Manager Marketing & Organisation responsible at Volksbank Malta Ltd. She is 52 years old and has three daughters from her first marriage to a Maltese. Netty studied English and History and then changed to Marketing at Cologne University. After completing her studies, she worked in an advertising agency in Cologne until she had her first child in 1989. The following year, she moved to Malta and spent a few years at home, until her three daughters were all at school. In 1998 she was offered a job at Volksbank, and set up the Marketing department there.

Netty works from 8am to 5pm ‘in theory’ as she puts it. But there are always so many functions which she attends together with her husband, Herbert Skok, who is the Managing Director of Volksbank. She often organizes functions herself for Volksbank – two of them are now firmly fixed in our social calendar: the Austrian summer party or Heuriger and the Christmas concert.

This busy lady loves reading, swimming and going around Malta in the family’s small boat. She also loves motorbiking but unfortunately she never took the test for a license so cannot drive one herself – yet.

I have three daughters from my first marriage: Jessica, Rebecca and Janica. My second husband, Herbert Skok has two children, Barbara and Ulrich. Herbert’s son lives in Vienna. For the past two years my mother has been living with us. Additionally, I have a cat called Miss Piggy. So, we’re quite a big family.

I love eating shellfish, steaks and Italian antipasti

When I have some time to spare I enjoy relaxing with my family and friends over a nice meal and a bottle of good wine.

My favourite holiday destination is Italy but also St Petersburg which is amazing. There are other lovely and interesting places I love. Most fun was a motorbike ride from Naples down the Amalfi coast, and the most crazy holiday was driving our old Trabant car from the Czech Republic to Malta, which took us two weeks, was extremely uncomfortable but absolutely delightful.

One living person I admire is anyone who has character and is living up to the ideals he/she is pursuing.

A character in fiction I like very much is Sister Maria of The Sound of Music. I admire the way this woman gets her family through very difficult and dangerous situations during her escape from Austria.

If I could change one thing about myself it would be to get my license to drive a motorbike.

The writers I like best are Dan Brown – he comes up with the most captivating stories – and Ken Follett.

My dream job is possibly the one I now have. It is interesting with lots of different tasks but my favourite part is organizing events for the bank, and seeing our guests enjoying themselves.

My kind of music is from the Sixties and Seventies

If I won the lottery I would go on a very, very long holiday with my family. There is never enough time, holidays are too short.

My motto is “Et kütt wie et kütt” – a very wise saying in the dialect of my home town Cologne, which means: take things as they come, and make the best of it – be optimistic and enjoy life.
