The Delimara Power station and its serious health risks

Malta Independent Sunday, 6 February 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

I think that in this day and age everyone is aware of risks to their health and the health of their loved ones.

Lately, a good many television programmes have been produced that emphasise the necessity of having healthy eating habits. This is being done due to the serious problem of obesity we are facing as a country, which is a harsh reality. But if we seriously want to take care of our health we need to take care of the environment too.

Can you imagine the serious consequences that the power station in Delimara, Marsaxlokk has on nearby residents, on the country’s southern villages and on Malta in general? Attached are photos of the black smoke billowing out of the chimney a few days ago from the power station in question. This is something that happens and is a fact of life. What will happen in the coming days, months and years with the extension of the power station and incinerator? Take a look at these photos and just imagine what might happen.

I know Marsaxlokk is greatly loved by Maltese and foreigners alike, who enjoy dining, having coffee or drinks al fresco while chatting with friends and looking out to sea and at the picturesque scenery. Believe me, this was a site to behold some years ago, but unfortunately Marsaxlokk is being destroyed.

What about the health hazards that residents have, such as more respiratory problems, which, with time, can prove fatal. Have you considered that all this can lead to cancer, just as smoking cigarettes does? This is more serious because a person takes a conscious decision whether to smoke or not, but the smoke coming out from the power station is not our decision. We have ended up inhaling smoke whether we like it or not!

We need to wake up, especially the residents of Marsaxlokk. Where are you all, or are you trying to ignore what is happening? We need to fight for our rights; after all we are the residents and, even if we have different political views, when it comes to health all of us are involved because we are all in the same situation!

Myself and other residents of Marsaxlokk desperately wish that something is done as soon as possible.

We must act before it’s too late!
