The ADHD Family Support Group would like to express its support for the report issued by the Commissioner for Children vis a vis children who find themselves in need of support services due to behavioural issues.
It has long been the case that children, ie those under the age of 18, find themselves in the Mixed Admission Ward at Mount Carmel Hospital, with adults, and on sedation so that they don’t get upset by the other people around them.
This is because the Young People’s Unit cannot cater for children with a wide age range.
The facility for boys 18 and under at Corradino is not the answer either for someone with behavioural issues. And what should we do with the girls?
When are the authorities going to act upon reports like this one and sort out the situation properly.
Part solutions and empty promises will not help youngsters who will, if not given the right support now, end up requiring far more costly help later on in life as adults.
