Cycling: Free Easy paced community bike rides by KMS and MCF

Malta Independent Friday, 11 February 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Kunsill Malti għall-iSport (KMS) together with the Malta Cycling Federation (MCF) will be once again sponsoring free organised community bike rides in a number of locations.

This initiative aims to get people more active through cycling, help encourage more awareness for cycling and increase the confidence of average riders on the roads.

These bike rides offer a comprehensive program organised for and suitable for all types of cyclists, whatever experience and whatever age, including ordinary people, recreational riders and families with young children.

Cycling is a great mode of transport with a bit of practice and regular use, it also benefits your health, the environment and your purse! So instead of riding alone join one of KMS’s & MCF organised bike rides – they also offer the opportunity of meeting and making new friends.

In addition, these bike rides represent a unique opportunity for new and less confident bike riders to gain experience, as bike rides are taken at a moderately pace and normally last an hour or two, ideal for those not ready to take a full day’s bike ride.

No riders are left behind as they are kept together with a lead and follow-up car.

Everyone is invited to ride the bike at one of the upcoming bike rides scheduled as follows:

13 February: Zebbug – Mosta

6 March: St Paul’s By-pass – Bugibba

10 April: Zebbug – Sliema

31st July: Luxol ‘Cliff Micallef’s Memorial Bike Ride’

‘Car Free Day’ Bike Ride (date to be announced)

The first bike ride scheduled to take place on Sunday will take riders along the Zebbug by-pass and will then turn towards Ta’Qali when riders reach the Rabat main road. From Ta’ Qali the route will then head towards Mosta passing near Hal Mann, and then on to the main road heading towards the chapel; riders then turn towards the Mosta Square to finish near the Mosta Health Centre. Registration takes place at 9.30am and the ride will start at 10am starting near St. Dorothy’s School, Zebbug.

A pick up point along the route for younger riders will be set up near the Pitkalija, Ta’ Qali; youngsters have to be present at 10.20am. The bike ride should finish around 11am.

Cyclists should note that the route is not circular and will need to make arrangements to return to their cars. Alternatively a limited amount of bikes and helmets are being made available by the KMS against no payment (one must book in advance).

If it is one’sfirst time riding with the group, then one should arrive about 15 minutes early to ensure all is in order.

Full safety measures are taken during all bike rides. All cyclists are required to wear a helmet and stay with the group; apart from a lead car there are also back up teams, traffic police and an ambulance on standby following the group. Water will also be distributed free of charge.
