After years of putting up with the shambles that was the site of the Old Opera House, we are now entertaining the probability of an open air theatre which, in itself, raises great doubts among a large percentage of the population.
While keeping an open mind on the matter, I have to lend my voice to the objection of many about using a heritage site to house such mundane facilities as changing rooms, showers and toilets for theatre use. Surely it would be more prudent to find an alternative to answer the needs of the yet to be popularised open air theatre than to desecrate a site where remains have been found that date back to the Great Siege and which is thus sacred to Malta’s history?
Only an expert in this field can comment on other consequences that may result, should alterations to this site be carried out, and it would be circumspect and certainly advisable to find out before setting out on a course of destruction.
