I cannot understand all these arguments about the introduction of divorce in Malta when divorce already exists and is accepted by the State.
A number of Maltese who want a divorce are currently going overseas and obtaining it, which is then accepted by the State in Malta.
This means that the divorce campaign is being conducted against people who cannot afford to go abroad to get a divorce. This also means that we have a two tier society, i.e. those who can afford to pay for and obtain what is their right, in this case divorce, and those who cannot afford to pay for and obtain what is their right because they do not have money. They are being denied this by a good number of holy men who decide they have every right to choose the fate of others. Like every other change in this country, we always have a number of people who are holier than everyone else and want to impose their religious beliefs on others.
Am I right to state that this is a secular state and not a state based on religion?
While we should all respect the religious beliefs of others, I do not believe that the religious belief of some should affect the life of others.
I am very proud to be the result of a Christian/Catholic upbringing and the civilisation related to the Christian religion. However, I know that I, for one, have no right to impose my will and my beliefs on others as, unfortunately, is being done by many.
Those who are against divorce have every right to be against it and also to not divorce at any cost.
It is their choice and we should all respect it.
The No Campaign, together with a number of politicians, state that we should aim to strengthen the family so that no one would need to divorce. Can these eminent people tell us how they intend to strengthen the family because, as they have been leading this country for such a long time, it is to their shame that they have, up to now, done nothing to strengthen the family.
It would be interesting to know how these experts on everything are going to help strengthen the family unit so that Malta would become one big happy family.
