The President, Dr George Abela, yesterday welcomed the organising committee of the Sport Malta Awards – National Sports Awards at San Anton Palace.
The main them was the importance and need of sport these days, especially in the development of society in Malta.
Pippo Psaila, chairman of the Organising Committee, led the delegation composed of Bernard Vassallo, chairman of the Maltese Council for Sport (KMS), Charles Camenzuli, president of the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sports (GhGS) as well as Bertie Muscat, vice chairman KMS, Sandro Micallef and Mario Meli, secretary and treasurer of the GhGS.
The group also included Massimo Cremona, a national table-football team player who won the second edition of the SportMalta award and was also runner-up in the Sportsman of the Year contest. Also present was Silvio Catania, winner of the Official of the Year contest and a representative of the Team of the Year.
The other winners – Andre Schembri (sportsman of the year), Danika Bonello Spiteri (sportswoman of the year) and Daniel Bajada (young player of the year) could not attend because of their sporting commitments away from the island.
The contests are organised annually by the Maltese Council for Sports and the Ghaqda Gurnalisti Sports.
