I write with reference to the parliamentary report ‘Facilitating the expropriation of public property’ (TMID, 10 February). While the interest in Dr Azzopardi’s speech in parliament the day before is appreciated, allow me to point out that the report in question refers to another speech which Dr Azzopardi delivered some 18 months ago while piloting the Bill that amended the law regulating expropriations, which is entirely unrelated to the Bill debated in Parliament last week.
The amendments Dr Azzopardi is currently proposing in Parliament will, among other things, give greater flexibility to Land Department eviction officers and allow Land Department officials to deliver eviction orders without being accompanied by the police due to the exponential increase in inspection and eviction orders being carried out by the Land Department.
