A draw was a fair result in this keen game as both teams had their good moments. St Andrews are now in fourth position on 26 points from 15 games while San Gwann are fourth from bottom on 18 from 15 games together with Sliema W but the latter have a game in hand.
The early pressure came from St Andrews after only two minutes when Jake Palmier served Daniel Saliba whose shot hit the upright with San Gwann keeper Mark Vella beaten.
A minute later Vella foiled Palmier with a timely sortie after he was put through in the area by Karl Mifsud Bonnici.
In a San Gwann attack, Aaron Borda was fouled outside the area and Dylan Galea drove the resultant free kick wide.
St Andrews had a shot by Palmier going over the bar. Mifsud Bonnici then served Palmier in the area and Zachary Bowman foiled him with a timely tackle. Later the same Palmier drove over the bar with an open goal at his mercy.
In another San Gwann attack, Isaac McCarty served Dylan Raynor with a through ball and St Andrews ‘keeper Gianluca Felice came out of his charge and fouled him just outside the area. The resultant free kick was taken by Dylan Galea and Felice saved his hard grounder.
Vella saved a Mifsud Bonnici shot in two attempts. Jacob Falzon was then fouled outside the area and Matthew Navarro floated a high ball in the area with Palmier heading the ball in from inside the area: the point was, however, disallowed for offside.
At the start of the second half, San Gwann’s Felice saved a Raynor shot to a corner and after Pace was fouled outside the area Felice saved the free kick by Justin Agius.
Clyde Cumbo then had a cross which found no takers.
San Gwann won a corner kick on the left flank which was well taken by Agius and Galea headed slightly over the bar.
Mifsud Bonnici was fouled outside the area and Vella saved the free kick by Erik Gollcher.
San Gwann came close to break the deadlock seven minutes before the end when Raynor served Nickolai Bickle in the area and after Felice partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away by a defender.
In the first minute of added time St Andrews substitute Michael Johnson served Luke Mercieca with a square pass in the area but San Gwann substitute keeper Liam Farr saved his close-range shot.
