Local sprint prodigy Diane Borg has showed excellent early season form this year in the 60m races.
She won all three of the local winter season competitions posting the best times of 7.64sec (w) and 7.71sec. The latter time, ran last Saturday, equalled the Minimum Qualifying Standard set by Athletics Malta for participation at the European Indoors to be held in the first weekend of March in Paris.
As part of her buildup for her Euro Indoor participation and with the help of the Malta Amateur Athletics Association and the Malta Olympic Committee’s Centre of Excellence, Diane was accepted and participated in the First Showtime Super Series event (showtimesuperseries.co.uk) organised at Lee Valley, London this week.
Diane qualified for the final with a time of 7.74sec but bettered her own seasonal best in the final to finish a close third with a time of 7.69sec (first and second places being taken up with 7.67sec and 7.68sec respectively), posting yet again the fastest legal time of the year.
Diane, who is currently in her final year of studies at the University of Malta, was hosted by twin sisters Martina and Francesca Xuereb, who are currently studying and training in London. All three athletes will meet once more in the coming days with all the National Sprints Teams in Formia, Italy, for a sprints/relay training camp being organised by the MAAA and the MOC in preparation for the GSSE being held later on this year in Liechtenstein.
