It is undoubtedly remarkable that at this point in time the great majority of Maltese MPs oppose divorce legislation.
What could be the reason for this disgraceful, albeit sad, state of affairs? Unless they are totally bereft of the common sense enjoyed by us lesser mortals, in their heart of hearts they must surely be aware that in a world crammed with its share of imperfect human beings and very often in circumstances beyond anyone’s control, divorce legislation should be there for those who need it, being the only just solution available in a civilized world. Obviously, this particular solution does not impinge in any way on the rights of others, which is why a referendum to decide whether divorce legislation should be enacted is both pointless and unjust.
Furthermore, existent happy marriages could never be affected in any case, despite the absurd propaganda to the contrary orchestrated by the Catholic Church and by a substantial number of pious PN hypocrites and a handful of PL bigots. Over the past months the poor Maltese, through the media, have been repeatedly exhorted and coerced by priests, parliamentarians and their plebeian pushers in a desperate bid to hold back the clock.
It is disquieting to read or listen to certain priests posing as objective participants when they are inextricably subjective to their religion and its dictates. It is even more disquieting to watch our honourable representatives wallow in mediocrity over this ineffably
simple problem of this long overdue civil right.
