The ASA National Swimming Team participated in the ISM International Swim Meet held in Berlin between the 4th and 6th March. Swimmers from more than thirty-five countries took part.

The aim of the ASA’s participation in the Berlin meet, made possible through the support of the Malta Olympic Committee, was to ensure that the National Team swimmers continue with their preparations for the GSSE Games of Liechtenstein being held next June.

The team was led by National Coach Andy Colbourn and ASA Swimming Technical Committee Secretary and Treasurer Chris Agius.

During the meet, the following National Swimming Records were broken.

Andrea Agius improved on his own National Records when in the 50m Breaststroke he stopped the clock at exactly 30.00secs. beating his 30.55, and in the 100m Breaststroke he clocked 1.07.33 to improve on his previous time of 1.07.47.

Andrew Chetcuti achieved the GSSE MQSs set by the Malta Olympic Committee when he clocked 24.10 in the 50m Freestyle event and 57.24 in the 100m Butterfly race. He also set a new National Record when he set a new time of 52.06 in the 100m Freestyle to improve on his own previous time of 53.06sec.

The ASA National Swimming Coach Andy Colbourn giving his first comments on arrival of the team back in Malta stated: “I was very happy with the team’s performance and the results in Berlin show that we are on schedule with the team’s preparations for GSSE”.

The Male ASA National Swimming team of which both Andrea Agius and Andrew Chetcuti form part also recently qualified when the MQS for the 4 x 100m medley was achieved during the last swimming time trials held at the National Pool Tal-Qroqq on the 19 February.

The ASA will hold the next swimming Time Trials at the National Pool Tal-Qroqq tomorrow at 2pm.
