Squash - Egypt to meet England in World Cup final
Raneem El Weleily has upset world No. 3 Rachael Grinham to help put title favourites Egypt in the final of the squash World Cup yesterday. Weleily rallied from 7-4 down in the deciding fifth game, after men's world No. 2 Ramy Ashour beat Cameron Pilley 11-5, 11-3, 11-8 for Egypt to win the opener match of their semifinal. Third-ranked Karim Darwish then handled Aaron Frankcomb 11-8, 9-11, 11-5 in the dead rubber to made it a clean sweep for top-ranked Egypt, which will play defending champion England in the final today. The No. 2-seeded England beat Malaysia 2-1 in the other semi. Jenny Duncalf retired from her match against Low Wee Wern after injuring her groin. .
Olympics - Longtime Swedish Olympic chairman Anderberg dies
Carl-Gustav Anderberg, who served as chairman of the Swedish Olympic Committee for quarter of a century, has died. He was 85.
Committee spokesman Bjorn Folin said Anderberg died on Monday after a long illness. Anderberg chaired the committee from 1976 to 2000 and was later named honorary chairman. The committee said yesterday that Anderberg will be remembered as a visionary who “saw the need to give our athletes better conditions to compete internationally.”
Tennis - Federer promises Davis Cup return for Switzerland
Roger Federer is returning to the Davis Cup to help Switzerland try to reach the top-tier World Group. Federer says on his official website he's “really looking forward” to facing Portugal at home in a second-tier, second-round tie. The tie starts on 8 July, five days after the Wimbledon men's singles final. Federer last played in the Davis Cup in September 2009, winning both of his singles as Switzerland beat Italy in a World Group playo-ff. The Swiss tennis federation says it will choose a venue for the Portugal tie within days.
Football - France to play two friendlies against Germany
France will play two friendlies against Germany in the next three years. The German football federation said yesterday the first match between the European powerhouses will be on 29 February, 2012 in Germany in a town to be determined. Germany will then travel to France on 5 March, 2014. France last played Germany in 2005, with the teams drawing 0-0 in a friendly at Stade de France.
Football - Gerrard ruled out for up to a month after surgery
Steven Gerrard will miss key matches for Liverpool and England after being ruled out for up to a month following groin surgery. Liverpool will be without their captain for at least three Premier League matches. Gerrard will miss England's 2012 European Championship qualifier against Wales on 26 March and a friendly against Ghana on 29 March.
