Unhygienic Conditions at carnival food stall

Malta Independent Sunday, 13 March 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On 6 March, we were in Valletta for the carnival and bought some candyfloss from the stand located between St John’s Street and Republic Street.

The seller did not give us any form of receipt. Also, after we finished the candyfloss we bought, we realized something odd about the paper that was rolled around it. After unrolling the pieces of paper we found out that they were made out of used calendar and history notes. After complaining, the seller said it was an exception.

We opened another candyfloss and discovered that this was made out of manuscript paper. The owners of the stall this time came themselves and apologised, saying it was not their fault but rather of those from whom they bought them, to prevent us from complaining about it in front of other customers. They also said that sticks are forbidden for child safety purposes and thus they have to use paper instead.

Even though a refund was offered, these still pose a health hazard as they are unhygienic for both adults and children who buy candyfloss from any stalls that buy the sticks from the same suppliers.
