Court To rule on Spanish league postponement

Malta Independent Saturday, 26 March 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

A Madrid court has said that it will decide next week if the upcoming round of Spanish league games will be postponed or held as scheduled on 2 and 3 April.

The league announced earlier this week it was postponing the round after negotiations with the government over revoking a law that mandates one game a week be shown on free-to-air television failed to progress.

But a group of six clubs that are against the strike broke ranks with the other topflight teams, a majority that includes Real Madrid and Barcelona, and asked a court to oblige the league to honour the scheduled games.

The court said yesterday it would hear both sides on Tuesday before ruling.
