This Evening’s football ‘battle’ of the Mediterranean between Malta and Greece

Malta Independent Saturday, 26 March 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

Our national team will be back on the battlefield for a EURO 2012 qualifying match today. This evening, Malta will take on the Euro 2004 champions Greece at Ta’ Qali Stadium.

Malta played against the Greek team eight times so far, and while our national team lost all four games in Greece, on home soil our team achieved very positive results. The last time these two teams met, our boys lost by a mere one goal to nil, when the Greeks scored a goal thanks to a controversial penalty in the dying minutes of the match. It is finally payback time!

The South End Core hopes that the players will leave any differences with the top officials of the MFA aside and that whoever is chosen by the coach will give his all in what we all consider one of the most difficult matches in our group.

Our national team, which played a friendly against the tough Swiss team earlier this year that ended goalless, is currently last in the Euro 2012 Group F standings. So far, Malta has no points, even though the matches were all lost by an average margin of two goals.

The South End Core is appealing for support at Ta’ Qali this evening under the charge of the Grand Master of Ceremonies Louis Agius.
